Do you leave the rubber caps on a dog shock collar?
Most of the time, yes —leave the rubber (silicone) caps on unless your collar’s manual specifically tells you to remove them for a certain coat type or contact point length. The caps are designed to soften contact, reduce skin irritation, and help prevent the metal points from rubbing or pressing too harshly against your dog’s neck.
That said, the “right” setup depends on your dog’s coat and how the collar fits. On many dogs, capped points still make reliable contact as long as the collar is snug enough not to slide, positioned high on the neck, and rotated regularly to avoid pressure in one spot.
If the collar is loose, caps can make it harder to get consistent contact, which can tempt owners to increase intensity—something that can often be avoided by improving fit first.

When removing the caps may make sense
Some dogs with very thick or long coats may not get consistent contact with capped points. In that case, removing the caps (or switching to longer points approved by the manufacturer) can improve contact at a lower setting.
If you do this, keep sessions short, check the skin frequently for redness, and avoid leaving the collar on for long periods.
Safety and comfort checks (caps on or off)
Comfort comes down to fit and time worn . You should be able to slip two fingers under the strap, and the collar shouldn’t be worn all day.
- Inspect the neck daily for redness or sore spots.
- Clean contact points as directed by the manufacturer.
- Stop use if irritation appears and reassess fit and setup.
A calmer alternative: refine walk control first
Many owners reach for training collars when the real issue is walk control . A well-fitted harness and leash setup can reduce pulling and make walks calmer without relying on contact points.
If you’re building a practical, everyday walk kit, start with a consistent setup you’ll actually use—then fine-tune handling from there.
“Love the sleek black design. My dog gets excited the second this harness comes out of the closet haha”
