When should you see mist?
Many mist diffusers begin releasing a visible plume within seconds to about a minute after you turn them on, although the exact time depends on the diffuser’s design and settings. If you don’t see mist right away, give the unit a moment to start before changing settings or opening it, and remember that a faint plume can be harder to see against a light background.
Check the product’s listed specifications when evaluating when should you see mist.
Why might a diffuser take longer?
A water-based ultrasonic diffuser needs enough water in its reservoir to operate as intended, and an empty or improperly filled tank can prevent mist from appearing. Power connection, operating mode, and residue around the mist outlet can also affect what you see, so make sure the unit is assembled correctly and follow its instructions before trying to clean or adjust it.
Does a waterless diffuser work differently?
Yes: a waterless diffuser does not use a water reservoir to create the same kind of visible plume you may expect from an ultrasonic model, so a lack of obvious mist does not necessarily mean it has failed to start. Our portable White “Aura Glide” uses a waterless pod and essential oil; you can learn about its setup and operation in our Aura Glide guide.
What should you do if there is no mist?
First, confirm that the diffuser is switched on, has power, and is set up according to its instructions; for a water-based model, also check the water level and make sure the tank and cover are seated properly. If the outlet or other accessible parts need cleaning, turn the unit off and follow the manufacturer’s care directions rather than poking into openings or adding extra oil in an attempt to force more mist.

FAQ
How to use a mist diffuser?
Set up your diffuser according to its instructions, using the specified water and oil quantities if it has a reservoir, then connect it to power and turn it on. For a waterless pod diffuser, follow the pod installation directions instead of adding water to the device.
How long should you let a diffuser run for?
Follow the recommended run time for your particular diffuser, since devices and settings vary. Stop using it if the scent feels too strong or causes discomfort, and allow fresh air into the space as needed.
