Decide whether the stairs are a good candidate
A ramp needs room to extend well beyond the bottom step; if the landing is short, the resulting incline may be too steep for your dog to use comfortably. Measure the total rise from the lower floor to the upper landing, then consider where the ramp could end without blocking a doorway or walkway.
Also consider your dog’s size, mobility, and confidence. A dog recovering from an injury or struggling with stairs may need a gentler slope than the available space allows, so ask your veterinarian what setup is appropriate before relying on a homemade ramp.

Build for grip, support, and stability
For a DIY stair ramp, start with a rigid panel designed to support your dog’s weight across the full span, and add a securely attached, nonslip walking surface. Make it wide enough for your dog to walk naturally, and consider raised side edges if there is a risk of stepping off.
Secure both ends so the ramp cannot slide, tip, or bounce, and make sure it rests on stable surfaces rather than rocking against individual stair edges. Round or cover exposed sharp edges, keep fasteners out of paw contact, and inspect the ramp regularly for loose parts or worn traction.
Introduce the ramp gradually
Let your dog explore the ramp while it is flat, then practice on a low incline before trying the full staircase. Use calm encouragement and treats, and stay beside your dog until you are confident they can use it without rushing or jumping off.
If the stairway is narrow, has a turn, or cannot accommodate a stable, gentle ramp, a different route or an assisted option may be safer. Our guide to dog ramps for SUV and truck loading covers a different setting: a vehicle ramp should not be assumed suitable for installation over household stairs. Our featured Car Dog Ramp | “Tailgate” by Owleys is a car dog ramp, not a substitute for a properly fitted stair ramp.
The Travel Buddy Mk. II Dog Hammock works alongside the ramp and keeps the back seat covered, so shed dog fur lands on a washable surface instead of the car upholstery.

“Great car ramp!!!! It’s compact and easy to store in my sedan’s trunk. The anti-slip surface is excellent for rainy days, ensuring my dogs can climb safely!!!!”

FAQ
How can I make a DIY stair ramp for my dog?
Measure the stair rise and available floor space, then choose a sturdy panel, add a nonslip surface, and secure it firmly at both ends. Test it for movement before use, and help your dog learn to walk on it gradually.
