What to Use to Make a Safe Dog Ramp

You can make a dog ramp with plywood, solid wood boards, carpet, rubber matting, outdoor turf, hinges, screws, and a sturdy support frame. For vehicle loading, choose materials that can handle your dog’s weight, provide traction in wet conditions, and sit securely against the tailgate or cargo opening.

A 1/2-inch to 3/4-inch plywood panel is a common choice because it is flat, easy to cut, and strong enough for many medium and large dogs when properly supported. Measure from the ground to your vehicle’s loading point, then choose a ramp length that keeps the incline gentle rather than steep.

Cover the walking surface with indoor-outdoor carpet, rubber runner material, marine carpet, or textured anti-slip tape. Attach the grip layer with construction adhesive, staples, or screws with washers, and check that no sharp edges or loose corners can catch your dog’s nails.

Use 1×3 or 1×4 lumber along the sides and underside to reduce flexing, especially for larger breeds. Add low side rails or raised edge strips to help guide your dog’s paws and prevent stepping off the ramp during loading.

A longer ramp creates a more comfortable slope, which is important for senior dogs, short-legged breeds, and dogs with joint sensitivity. Before regular use, place the ramp against your SUV, truck, or tailgate and confirm it does not slide, wobble, or interfere with the bumper or cargo floor.
